A perfect vacation destination Greece is a peninsular
and mountainous country situated in southern Europe,
between the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea and the
Mediterranean Sea. Oriental amongst all European
countries it shares its borders with Albania,
Turkey, Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia. It is the only country of the EU
without any border with another member.
Greece has a total area of 130.800 square km
and one fifth of the area is represented by the
large number of islands. Greece is a country composed,
in both its seas, by more than 1400 islands of
which 169 are inhabited. Most of the islands are
scattered in the Aegean Sea between the Greek
mainland and Turkey. The groups of islands in
the Aegean are: the Cyclades, the Dodecanese,
the Saronic, the Sporades, the Northern Aegean
and Crete.
The Aegean archipelago includes the regions of
the Saronic, the closest islands from Athens,
the Cyclades, the most famous region with 39 islands
such as Santorini,
Mykonos, Paros or Naxos, the Dodecanese which
lies off the Turkish coast, of which Rhodes is
the best known, Crete the famous and largest island,
the Sporades near the city of Volos and the Northeast
Aegean group which includes Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios,
Samos and Ikaria).
The islands offer a great scenery and scope of
adventure and travel and are worth visiting.
