Pushkar
|
|
Pushkar is a sacred
town for the Hindus. The Great Hindu epics of Mahabharat
and Ramayana make references to this religious place
regarded to be Adi Tiratha. Evidence points to its having
existed during the fourth century B.C. The legend about
the Creator God, Bramha describes the creation of this
lake. When the demon Vajra Nabha killed Brahma's children,
he in turn struck him with his weapon, a lotus flower.
Vajra Nabha died with the impact, and the petals of
the lotus fell at three places. One of them is Pushkar,
where a lake sprung into being. |

Jaisalmer
|
|
The name Jaisalmer
stirs up a vivid picture of absolute magic and sparkle
of the desert. Established sometime in the 12th century
the far-flung place of Jaisalmer is almost intact and
untouched by any outside persuadions, even during the
days of the colonial rule.Very few cities can match
the magnificence that surrounds Jaisalmer. There is
a fort that stands tall in the desert fog, its yellow
sandstone walls and strongholds taking on a golden hue
in the afternoon sun, which is why it is aptly called
Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort.

Buddist Tourism
|
|
Emperor Ashoka although
a sincere Buddhist was also liberal towards other religions
in his kingdom. For the 'ajivakas' ascetics he had caves
cut on the stark and rocky Barabar hills. The most interesting
of these is the one called Lomas Rishi Cave. It is carved
out of a huge rounded granite hummock. The facade of
this cave is an similar to the wood and thatch kutis
that ancient ascetics including Buddhist monks used
to live in. |
